Over the past 20 years, sexism in religion has been unraveling as women have questioned gender inequalities both in sacred texts and in religious organizations and practices. During this time, more women have been enrolling in seminaries and becoming ordained clergy, but they are still a small minority and have limited career opportunities.

1920, the feminist movement came to a complete halt (Flexner and Fitzpatrick, 1996).

But in the mid-1960s, the women's movement was revived, and thus began the second wave of feminism. Two factors seem to have brought it on. First, after the end of World War II, more and more women went to college. After receiving so much education, they were unhappy to be mere housewives or to hold low-status, low-paying jobs outside the home. Second, many young women participating in various social movements (including the civil rights movement, the student movement, and the anti-Vietnam War movement), supposedly fighting for the freedom of the oppressed, found themselves oppressed by the male freedom fighters. These women, wrote Annie Gottlieb (1971), "found themselves serving as secretary, mother and concubine, while men did all the speaking, writing, and negotiating—and these were men who professed to reject the 'oppressive' ritual machinery of their society."
